Summary
A hierarchical task inventory is a structured way of describing users’ performance tasks. The inventory provides an understanding of the tasks a user needs to perform in order to accomplish a goal. In this sample I was tasked with booking a hotel.
Hotel websites now like Trivago, Hotels.com, Expedia, and Hotwire (just to name a few), make the process of booking a room fast and easy. It appears to users as two easy steps: search and book. However, there are many different ways people search, which makes things a lot more complicated on the back end. For example, some users might book based on reviews only, not concerned with price. Other users might be more budget conscious and less concerned with how many stars the hotel has. What is important to remember is that everyone navigates the site according to their wants and needs and the website has to consider this. The investment of creating a hierarchical task inventory upfront will provide a return of simplicity and ease of use to those visiting the site.
